A Weekend in Slow Motion

Saturday morning I woke without looking at my phone. Not a triumph of willpower — it had simply fallen into the gap between the bed and the wall overnight, and I was too lazy to fish it out.

The day began with a pot of congee. As the steam curled out from under the lid, it struck me that I hadn't waited for something to slowly turn ready in a very long time.

In the morning I went down to the wet market. Tomatoes at three-fifty a jin, the auntie rounding the small change off; a sea bass, where the fishmonger asked, "Eating tonight or tomorrow? If tomorrow, let me pick you one half a jin smaller." The exchanges carry no information at all, yet they are steadying — the world, it turns out, is fairly tolerant of slowness.

In the afternoon I fixed a chair with a loose leg. Screws, glue, a clamp, two hours of drying. I took no photo, posted nothing — I just sat down and rocked. It didn't rock. Nothing about it warranted a record, and yet it was my entire sense of achievement for the afternoon.

At dusk I walked along the river until it turned dark. Earbuds left behind, I heard an angler mutter, "this line's no good today," and a couple quarreling over dinner who made themselves laugh halfway through. Those sounds are normally sealed off — the B-side of life, hidden behind an album.

That night I read a few dozen pages and was asleep before eleven. Tallied up, the weekend "achieved" nothing — but it left me a sentence against common sense: doing nothing is a craft, and it takes practice.

A closing thought

Slowness is not the opposite of speed; it is the neighbor of meaning. Once I stopped narrating my time by "what got done," time began to show its texture. I don't plan to repeat that weekend — a person practicing a craft never calls the same practice "a repeat."
