My Minimal Writing Toolkit
Ten years of writing, and my tools have traced a parabola: too few, then too many, then back to few. The whole "toolkit" is down to three items. Two years with them, and I have never once thought about replacing any.
First, a plain-text editor. Not a note app, not a cloud writing platform — just something that opens .txt files. The benefit sounds unremarkable: the files are always yours, startup time is zero, and with no formatting to tempt you, a sentence has to stand on being a sentence.
Second, a folder archived by year. The structure is comically plain: 2026/10/why-i-blog.txt. No tags, no full-text search — finding old drafts runs on memory and finger-work. Strangely, precisely because finding costs something, I remember roughly where each piece lives. Before a tool helps us remember, it usually helps us forget.
Third, a fountain pen and a sheet of paper. Used at exactly two moments: when the first draft refuses to begin, and when the second draft refuses to move. Paper honestly shows you how long a paragraph is; ink honestly shows you how lazy a word is.
I have no "productivity secret" to sell. What I want to hand over, instead, is the honest question: does this tool help you think clearly, or does it help you feel that you're thinking clearly?
Fewer tools, easier habits.
This site is part of the answer itself: hand-written HTML and CSS, no build tools, no dependencies, and no grand plan to "someday turn it into a platform." Its ceiling is low — but it is mine, like a study whose door has no smart lock.
(A footnote: the list changes every year, but the trio has held for two. That persistence is probably the only qualification that earns a place on the list.)
